I was checking out a "hidden" park the other day. I say hidden, because I have been down with in a 1/2 mile from this park many times and never had a clue it was there. After checking it out one evening, I have found it to be one of my favorites in Cincinnati, but that's not the point of this post.

The trail I had taken, led me down by the tracks. So I ask you: is this old GE happier than a miata?

Rearing horse, clearly a Ferrari.

Clearly. I'm actually pissed at myself for ignoring the horse in my composition.

About where is this in Cincinnati? I wouldn't mind checking it out if it's close.

It's in Mariemont. Drive back to the Mariemont Municipal Swimming Pool. Park in their parking lot. There is an informative sign that will tell you about the area, that you will see in the parking lot (I'd suggest reading it). Then you can walk down a path that leads you into a cool old tunnel under a bridge. You will pass some tracks after the tunnel (these are the tracks I walked back on btw). Then you will see an area with a bunch of fenced gardens and there will also be a sign that shows you the different trails. I took the one that leads you to the right of the gardens. I want to say the red trail. It also leads you parallel to what I guess is a Little Miami River run off. If you go down by the water; watch out for baby toads. They are everywhere. There are also a good amount of glacial rocks and some plant fossils if you're in to that. Let me know if this helps!

It's called Mariemont Garden, but gps wants to take you to the otherside of the rive so don't use that.

Perfect! Thank you. My gf lives north of there by about 20 minutes. When I visit this would be an awesome place to go for a walk.

This old GE is a bit of a rare bird (horse?) these days: it's meant to run long hood first. The field spotting items are: ditch lights and snowplow. An unseen item would be a full height short nose, which I can't tell from this photo.

Normal, short hood first operation has those two items on the other end. I don't have an NS roster, but I'd be willing to bet that this was a Southern locomotive before it became an NS loco. The Southern was known far and wide for ordering it's Diesels backwards compared to everyone else. Even the control stand in the cab is set up for the long hood, so if it runs "backwards" the engineer has turn around in his seat, away from the controls.

Some locos were later converted to the American norm, but there are some left alone as they are close to the end of their expected life span.

And yes, it's happy to have made it this far!

I guess I can't un-grey your post. I tried. Thanks for the info, as I know almost nothing about trains. I knew it was a fine piece of human engineering and in surprisingly good shape. This one looks to have plenty of life left!

Edit: I think I did un gray your post!

You've got a good start with finding this baby! Trains can be addicting, much like gasoline, a stick shift, and good rubber (Jalopnik fan, amongst other interests, here).

Haha. I just admire any engineering that peaks my interest. Cheers.
